PRODUCING SUGARCANE RUM SINCE 1694
Mauritius is a cultural melting pot shaped by the island's rich colonial history, which dates back to when it was a Dutch, French, and British colony. The Dutch were the first to introduce sugarcane farming, processing, and fermentation to the island's rum industry, giving rise to the first "eaux de vie de canne" in 1694. When the French acquired control of the island in 1715, they established the first distillery in 1740, producing "Arak" rum, which is still used by Mauritanians to designate alcoholic beverages. Arak was often part of the slaves’ ceremonies to mark the beginning and ending of the harvest season. In 1810, Mauritius became a British colony, and the sugarcane became its primary crop. To date, Mauritius is one of the few countries that produces both agricultural (obtained by fermenting and distilling of the sugarcane juice) and industrial rum (obtained by distilling molasses, a by-product of the sugarcane).
Mauritius is known for its sugarcane industry, but it is also home to stunning white beaches and crystal blue lagoons, making it a popular vacation destination for thousands of visitors.
